AppWire protocol reference

AppWire connects browser, native and custom clients to evener hub, which routes session requests to evener serve daemons. Start with Integrations for an authenticated client example. This page owns the exact wire reference for main, not an independent compatibility promise.

This document is generated from the declarative catalog in appwire/protocol.go (appwire.Methods and appwire.Notifications); a test cross-checks that catalog against the live hub and daemon routers. To change it, edit the catalog and/or the prose template (internal/appwiredoc/protocol.md.tmpl) and run go run ./internal/appwiredoc -out docs/appwire-protocol.md from the repository root.

Transport

• Endpoint. A single WebSocket at /rpc. The browser uses wss:/ws: to match the page; hub→daemon dials the daemon's rendezvous endpoint.
• Authentication. The hub authenticates the HTTP upgrade with its cookie or bearer token before AppWire initialization. Initialization is not login. Keep remote traffic on TLS or a trusted private transport.
• Framing. Each WebSocket text message is one JSON object. Three shapes:
  • Request — {"id": <number>, "method": <string>, "params": <object>}.
  • Response — {"id": <same id>, "result": <object>} or {"id": <same id>, "error": {"code", "message", "data"}}.
  • Notification — {"method": <string>, "params": <object>} with no id (server-pushed; see the catalog below). These are schematic shapes, not literal JSON examples. There is no jsonrpc field. Do not assume JSON-RPC batch or cancellation conventions.
• Read limit. 128 MiB per message (large image inputs and transcript replays ride the same socket).
• Write timeout. Each server→client write is bounded (30 s); a stuck write tears the connection down rather than blocking the send loop.
• Keepalive. WebSocket has no application-level liveness on its own and coder/websocket does not auto-ping, so a silently-dropped TCP connection (sleep/wake, NAT rebind, proxy idle timeout) would otherwise leave both ends believing the socket is open. Every hop therefore pings:
  • Server side (internal/appserver) pings the peer every 15 s and tears the connection down if no pong arrives within 10 s. This covers both server roles — hub-for-browser and daemon-for-hub. While request intake prevents the receive loop from reading, the server skips new pings and disregards a missing pong for an attempt that overlapped that pause. It lets an active ping finish within its existing deadline: canceling a control-frame write can close a healthy socket and cancel its pending requests. Heartbeats resume automatically when the reader is available; real disconnects still cancel connection-owned work.
  • Go client side (appwire.Client, used hub→daemon) runs the same ping loop via the optional Pinger transport capability.
  • Browsers can't send WebSocket ping frames from JS, so the web client sends an application-level ping request every 20 s with a 10 s timeout and force-closes the socket if it goes unanswered, which drives the normal reconnect path. These checks detect silent peers; they are not a universal 30-second completion deadline, particularly while request intake pauses the reader.

Connection lifecycle

1. initialize. Send initialize before ordinary requests. Its response carries the server's feature set. The protocol version must match exactly. After success, the client sends the initialized notification. Align client and server versions on mismatch. The connection-level ping keepalive also works before initialization.
2. Requests. The client issues request/response calls from the catalog.
3. Subscriptions. thread/read with subscribe: true registers the connection for that thread's notifications; replaceSubscription: true swaps any prior subscription. The response also hydrates current state.
4. Notifications. While subscribed, the server pushes the notifications in the catalog below (turn/item lifecycle, deltas, queue and status changes, jobs, warnings).
5. Reconnect + resynchronize. On a dropped socket, authenticate and initialize again, restore subscriptions, then hydrate from authoritative snapshots. A replacing subscription is appropriate only when the caller owns the connection's subscription set. Recorded history repairs the view, but transient events are not guaranteed to replay without loss. Fence results from the old connection generation instead of merging them into new state.

A successful turn/start response acknowledges a turn and mutation receipt, not completion. Follow turn notifications and reads for completed, failed or interrupted. Partial text is not a final result. A client request timeout does not cancel server work or prove that a mutation was never accepted. Use the catalog's explicit control methods, then inspect the resulting state.

Keep public routing refs opaque. Retry-safe mutations carry clientMutationId and expectedInstanceId; preserve the original intent and reconcile receipts after uncertainty. A request ID alone provides no mutation deduplication.

History content selection

thread/read and thread/turns/list accept includeConversation, includeThinking, includeToolCalls, includeToolCallIntents, includeSystemMessages, and includeDiagnostics. Each defaults to true. Tool calls include arguments and results together; intents can be requested without that payload. Selection applies before the public page count and byte limits, and to the read's downstream subscription. Shared upstream feeds stay complete. Cursors and opaque snapshot incarnations distinguish normalized selections; changing selection requires a fresh latest read. Status, capability, mutation and recovery metadata are always retained. Metadata-only reads and mutation relay setup preserve an existing subscription's history selection; an includeTurns: true read establishes or changes that view.

Error model

Errors use JSON-RPC codes in error.code with a human error.message. error.data.evenerErrorInfo carries a structured Evener-specific detail string when present. Common cases: method-not-found, invalid-params (params failed to unmarshal), invalid-request (e.g. a request before initialize). History reads distinguish three conditions:

• transcriptIndexRebuilding: the server owns a background index repair. data.retryDisposition is automatic. Retry the read after a delay so the repair can commit.
• transcriptIndexLocked: a writer or foreign rebuild holds the index lock, with no server-owned repair in flight. data.retryDisposition is automatic. Retry the read after a delay rather than starting another repair.
• transcriptHistoryFailed: the history has failed, and the error identifies its last recorded entry. This is terminal, not an automatic-retry signal. Stop retrying and inspect the error and saved history with Doctor before choosing a recovery action.

A retry-safe mutation arriving on a connection whose inbound request queue is at high-water depth is refused in band as connectionBackpressure with data.cause "queueSaturated", mutationOutcome "notAccepted" and retryDisposition "automatic": the mutation was never queued and never started, so an identical retry is safe. The message states what happened on the hub and promises nothing about what a client will do.

Explicit skill and command input

Input-bearing requests accept canonical selections alongside text and images: {"type":"skill","name":"pkg:review"} and {"type":"command","name":"pkg:review"} request different behavior even when their names match. These items admit only type and name; bodies, paths, arguments and other raw keys are rejected. The target's advertised skillInput or commandInput capability authorizes that kind, never a client assumption.

Command selections resolve exact catalog identity at consumption and expand once per canonical name with empty arguments under their source's existing expansion rules. Original user text is retained separately from expanded bodies. Generated output cannot select or recursively invoke commands. Existing leading typed /command args retains its arguments; unselected inline slash prose is not an explicit selection. Queue, return and recovery input keeps both kinds.

Text items may carry mentions: [{kind, name, offset}] as editing metadata. Offsets count UTF-16 code units in that text item and locate ordered, non-overlapping visible labels for separately selected canonical identities. They never authorize activation or carry command bodies, paths or arguments. Accepted input persists these locations; queue reads and thread/queueChanged project FIFO-aligned mentions beside full text and canonical name lists, so a fresh client's edit restores the chosen kind without selecting duplicate prose. Attachment marker translation shifts locations at the submission boundary. Automatic transcript-refusal recovery uses returnClaimedQueuedMutation to clone the original pending.Input, retaining text items and their locations. The separate pushQueueHead helper has no production callers; explicit use of it retains locations in the flattened returned text. Public turn/drainAsSteer preserves each retained entry's raw text and shifts its locations by the preceding UTF-16 text length plus the two-unit \n\n separator, including any extra drain input. Image-only entries add no text separator. Direct promotion retains the original text items and their item-relative locations. These locations survive durable recovery and mutation replay without changing canonical activation identities.

Live completion reads thread.evener.diagnostics.commands from the owning session's thread/read response. It contains path-free descriptors for that session's loaded plugin, project and user commands, resolved for its cwd, host and harness. An absent field means unreported inventory; [] means an authoritative empty inventory. Neither permits controller catalog fallback. evener/command/list remains controller-wide discovery for the separate palette; evener/spawn/slashCatalog supplies target-scoped pre-session discovery.

Request methods

Scope is which binaries expose the method: both (hub and daemon), hub (evener hub only — auth, launch config, provider instances, model listing), or daemon (the evener serve engine only). connection methods (initialize, ping) are handled by the connection itself on every server, outside the router. unimplemented methods are defined with a client stub but served by no router (reserved).

JSON fields of each params/result/payload type, reflected from the Go structs. An embedded type contributes its own fields inline.

Follow type links for nested AppWire schemas. Go notation describes the stored type, not a JSON literal: *T is a pointer (which can be nil), []T is an array of values, and map[string]T is an object with string keys. The byte-slice exception, []uint8 (Go []byte), encodes as a base64 string. interface {} is an arbitrary JSON value. Named scalar types below give their underlying Go kind; the AppWire source defines their constants and validation. External leaves are not implementation schemas: time.Time encodes an RFC 3339 timestamp string, and jsontext.Value holds raw JSON whose shape depends on its containing field. Do not infer fields from their Go internals.

Omitempty records the Go JSON tag: the encoder may omit an empty value. It does not say whether a request field is optional, nullable, or valid. Method validation and capability checks still apply, including to fields without that tag. These tables describe fields, not every validation constraint.
